Reconciliation

The Foundation of Peace: Reconciliation with man always begins with reconciliation to God. Once Jacob settled his "wrestling match" with the Lord, he was finally ready to face his past.

Initiative: Someone has to take the first step; grace doesn't wait for the other person to move first.

Humility: Reconciliation always "goes low" before it goes forward. It requires laying down our pride and "rights."

Restitution: Grace repairs what sin damaged. It involves a sincere effort to make things right.

Boundaries: Peace does not always require proximity. Relational boundaries can protect what God is currently doing in our lives.

Ultimately, this story points us to the Ultimate Reconciler, Jesus Christ. While we were still enemies of God, He took the initiative, lowered Himself in humility, and paid the full price of restitution to bring us back into harmony with the Father.
