Several times in the Gospels, Jesus uses bad examples to teach
good lessons.
• He compares His return to the coming of a thief in the night in Matthew 24.
• He commands His followers to be wise as serpents in Matthew 10.
• He likened God to an unjust, unbelieving judge in Luke 18 who was swayed by a
widow's persistent request.
Today’s text is the penultimate case where Jesus uses a bad example to teach a good
lesson.
